Foundry Bronze Wren Sculpture For Collectors

£960.00

‘Nestor’ – Foundry Bronze Wren Sculpture

Designed and sculpted in north Cumbria by me, wildlife sculptor Kirsty Armstrong, and hand cast in pure foundry bronze in a traditional bronze foundry in County Durham.  ‘Nestor’ is a realistically and finely sculpted Wren showcasing British craftsmanship.

The bronze edition is limited to just 12 pieces, making it a truly special gift for nature lovers and art collectors alike, capturing the charm and curiosity of one of Britain’s most beloved garden birds.

About the Sculpture

The original sculpture was meticulously hand sculpted in modelling wax by me in my Cumbrian studio, before being moulded, and then cast, using the ancient lost-wax (cire perdue) process at a specialist foundry in County Durham.

Each piece is individually cast to order, first in Green foundry wax, before then being cast in foundry bronze. The bronzes are individually hand-chased, patinated, and waxed by the very skilled Aron McCartney to reveal the delicate feather textures and lifelike detail of the original sculpture. The eyes are finally painted using black enamel, bringing the sculpture to life. The result is a piece of exceptional durability, fine detail, realism and timeless presence.

Every bronze is individually numbered and accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity from the artist. It arrives beautifully presented in a plum-coloured gift box, ready to treasure or present to someone special.

The Meaning of ‘Nestor’

Description

How ‘ Nestor’ the Wren was made…

I’m a traditional sculptor with more than 35 years sculpting experience, working both for myself and for various fine art figurine manufacturers. I originally sculpted this little Wren piece in modelling wax, with the head sculpted over an actual Wren’s skull (which included the very fine beak).

After all the fine detail had been applied (using wooden and then metal tools), the finished original was then moulded locally by a specialist firm based in the English Lake District, not far too from my own workshop.

Next, I make a foundry wax cast from the rubber mould, back in my Cumbrian workshop. The wax is made ready, which includes adding the edition number, and then it is taken to the foundry over in Barnard Castle (a round trip of 140 miles), where it undergoes the amazing and ancient process of being transformed into pure bronze. Once cast, I review the piece over at the foundry, and the wax finish is applied using a blow torch. I give this a final buff when it has cooled down, and off he goes again back to my workshop in Cumbria. Here, I apply the enamel to the eyes, and pack him safely in his plum coloured gift box.

The Wren is suitable for both indoors and outside, although the enamelled eyes must be protected for use outdoors  (there is the option for the exterior finish at the checkout).

Inspiration…

My studio looks out on to farmland, and for several years we have been lucky enough to have Wrens decide to build their small cave-like nests at our back door. I’ve called the Wren ‘Nestor’, which is a name of Greek origin meaning ‘the one who returns’ or ‘homecoming’. It is also a name associated with wisdom and intelligence.

Dimensions and details…

The Wren measures approximately 3.5” (9cm) to his tail, and the base is 2 3/4” ( 7cm) square. The base is neatly covered in self adhesive plush velour felt for inside use, while the enamelled eyes are protected with yacht varnish on the exterior version, and they have no felt on the base.
