Description
Cremant Imperial and White Star. Beautiful gilded and decoupaged handcrafted scallop shell trinket dish set featuring the Moët & Chandon advertising posters by Alphonse Mucha (1860 – 1939).
Designed and painted by Mucha in 1899 for Moët & Chandon’s champagne advertising campaign, the designs are the epitome of Art Nouveau and bygone times.
The Cremant Imperial design features a young woman wearing garments in a Byzantine style holding a jewelled cup with her hair swept up in a jewelled bandeau, with a circular stained glass window in the background. The softer pinks and peaches in the design offer a reminder of the taste of champagne. The dark colours and background suggest sophistication, grandeur, luxury and a hint of decadence!
The White Star design was used to illustrate Moët & Chandon’s lighter champagne. The design and background is lighter and gives the impression of being less formal and more playful. The young woman illustrated wears a pale pink dress, with bare shoulders and carries a bowl of grapes. Her hair and the background is adorned with flowers. The sinuous flowing lines, organic shapes are typical of Art Nouveau and the relationship with nature.
Striking, beautiful and unique, the shells are a charming gift for others, or treat yourself!
These beautiful dishes can be purchased as a set, comprising of the two scallop shells, one in each design, or may be purchased individually. Each XL scallop shell measures 13.5 cm width at its widest point. Handcrafted and repurposed these shells are suitable for keeping trinkets, jewellery, rings, cuff links or any small treasures safe, or just used as a standalone piece for a decorative accent.
After reading the history of the poster designs the vintage style jewellery dishes were hand painted with a black and white background respectively in keeping with the mood of the designs – the dark sophistication of Cremant Imperial and the lighter, more frivolous White Star. The white background of the White Star was then painted with a wash of pastel pink hues. The decoupage was then cut and applied in separate sections, to form the ‘halo’ effect around the figure, which Mucha was renowned for. Finally, after laquering a metal finial was applied that evokes the spirit of Art Nouveau with Rhinestones and Swarovski crystals in colours that complement the design.
Every repurposed shell trinket dish is handmade. Shells are checked and cleaned and the design painstakingly applied. The edge and reverse of the shell are gilded in a rich shade of gold paint. Finally many layers of lacquer has been added to the design. This gives the shell a glass like depth and shine and the appearance of porcelain.
The trinket dish arrives packaged in a luxury gift box, black for Cremant Imperial and white for White Star, lined with luxury metallic tissue paper.
