Handcrafted Cedar Slice Statement Side Table

Description

These handcrafted cedar side tables were created from carefully selected cedar wood slices chosen for their extraordinary grain patterns, natural character and flowing organic shapes.

Rather than cutting the timber into uniform geometric lines, the original contours of the wood have been preserved to celebrate the individuality and story held within every growth ring, split and curve. The rich flowing grain creates an almost topographical appearance across the surface, making each table feel as much like sculptural art as functional furniture.

Natural splits within the cedar have been stabilised using handcrafted hardwood bow tie inserts — a traditional woodworking technique used both structurally and decoratively to prevent cracks from spreading further over time. Fine cracks and voids have also been carefully filled using black resin, subtly highlighting the timber’s natural imperfections rather than attempting to hide them.

The bow tie inserts were handcrafted from Australian red cedar brought back to the UK by my daughter, giving the pieces an added personal connection between family, craftsmanship and the natural world.

Each slab was individually flattened, shaped and hand sanded over many hours to achieve a beautifully smooth tactile finish while still retaining the authentic feel and texture of natural timber. The cedar was then finished using natural oils to enhance the warmth, depth and movement within the grain without masking its character beneath a heavy artificial coating.

Mounted on black three-rod steel hairpin legs, the finished tables combine warm organic timber with contemporary industrial styling, making them suitable for both modern and rustic interiors.
