Meet the Maker

Deborah and Archie

Hello and thank you for visiting and seeing a glimpse of my passion.

My love of making handcrafted jewellery started with a day course in Dorset creating silver rings and bangles and has continued ever since. I now create individual ‘one of a kind’ jewellery that is perfect for those who love organic, handmade silver and copper jewellery either to wear themselves or gift to friends and family.

All my pieces are designed and created in my little home studio in Berkshire, UK. I work with sterling silver, precious metal clay, copper and brass and add semi-precious gemstones, crystal and gemstone beads for a touch of sparkle and added interest. Each piece will be slightly different so you know you are receiving a truly handmade piece.

Texture is added to my work with hammers, metal stamps, etching, fusing and reticulation, fold forming and on occasions a rolling mill. I love creating simple, wearable jewellery suitable for any occasion. I take my inspiration from the world around me and often use real leaves, flowers, shells, lace, paper in my designs…anything really that has a texture and can be transferred to metal!

If you are buying for a gift I can ship direct to the recipient with the item gift wrapped and a short handwritten gift note added. Shipping within the UK is included.

All my jewellery complies with the UK hallmarking regulations and I have my own maker’s hallmark registered with the London Assay Office.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.

My perfect mindful escape (no yoga mat required!)

A cup of coffee and some bead weaving in progress

I think we all know what life can be like sometimes – between phone pings, endless To-do lists and school runs, a moment of quiet can feel like a luxury.

But… you don’t need a yoga mat, incense, or a mountain retreat to unwind.  Sometimes all it takes is a needle and thread, and a few (hundred!) tiny glass beads…

Although beading might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about having some time to yourself, there’s something very calming about repetitive stitching, focussing on the pattern and placement of the beads.  Seeing your beadwork grow with every stitch, bead by bead, can be incredibly satisfying.

In a world that loves speed and multitasking, being immersed in bead weaving teaches the opposite.  You absolutely can’t rush it.

Whether you’re weaving earrings, a bracelet, or just a sample to practise a new stitch, choosing a mindful way to spend your time has huge rewards.  So if your brain’s feeling a little scrambled and the world’s spinning too fast, thread a needle, and stitch some peace into your day!

Happy beading 🙂

What’s the difference between gold filled and gold plated?

Gold filled vs gold plated blog photo

As a designer and maker of bead woven jewellery, I often get asked about the materials I use, especially the difference between gold filled and gold plated components.

So what actually is the difference?

Gold Plated

Gold plated jewellery is made by applying a very thin layer of gold over a base metal, usually brass.  It gives the look of gold, but at a much lower price.  But, because the gold layer is very fine, this means that it can wear off with regular use, especially on parts that are used a lot ( such as clasps).  It’s great for occasional use, where appearance is more important that durability.

Gold Filled

Gold filled components have a much thicker outer layer of gold that’s pressure bonded to the core metal.  This method, along with the thickness of the gold layer, means it won’t easily rub off or flake (as is more likely with gold plated jewellery).  Many 14k gold filled pieces of jewellery will last for many years, even decades.  This makes it a perfect option for more meaningful or frequently worn pieces, along with it being more suitable for those with sensitive skin.

In my bead woven jewellery, I tend to use 14k gold filled components, especially for earrings where durability and caring for sensitive skin is so important.

Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong, just thoughtful choices on how you’ll wear and enjoy your piece of jewellery.

If you’re unsure, I’m always more than happy to answer any questions about materials, especially if it helps you choose a piece you’ll love for years to come…

Cooksongold Design of the Month May 2025

Hi there!

Welcome to my first ever blog on the British Craft House.

I thought I’d start on a high.  And well, also because I never win anything and for once I did win something.  Of course I assumed it was a spoof.

To fill you in…I entered a competition run by Cooksongold – who supply many, if not most, of us jewellers with metal and lots of delightful tools.  Every month they announce a theme and folk send in a pic of their jewellery that fits the theme.  Its worth checking it out.  I’ve seen some incredible creations.

Last month the theme was geeky creations.  Well, we all have an inner geek.  Mine emerged when I visited CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) in Geneva earlier in the year.  Home of the discovery of the Higgs Bosun particle amongst other clever stuff.  Its great fun and honestly worth a visit.  It’s free too.

After my trip I got thinking about particles and molecules  I can’t claim a great level of understanding but the shapes and what they do just appeals to me.

So I’ve been creating silver molecules set with gemstones to give them a bit of added glam.  My first was an adrenaline molecule set with a Swiss blue topaz as a nod to my trip to Geneva and my inner geek.  Well the judges liked it and the rest is history.  The winning molecule is pictured above, but there is also serotonin, caffeine and dopamine – if you need your very own molecule, then you know where to find me!

Meet Our Most Loved Soaps: Customer Favourites Ranked

Person holding four handmade soap bars in natural colours — pink, green, cream, and blue — outdoors.

When it comes to choosing the perfect natural soap, our customers know exactly what they love — and at Ivy Soap House, we’re always listening. Over time, a few bars have emerged as clear favourites, each earning loyal fans for their gorgeous scents, gentle ingredients, and skin-loving benefits.

If you’re new to our range or just looking to see what others keep coming back for, here’s a closer look at our most loved soap bars — ranked by popularity.

So without further ado — meet the stars of the soap dish.

🥇 1st Place: Rose Garden

Key ingredients: Shea butter, olive oil, cacao butter, coconut oil, French rose clay, rose absolute & geranium essential oils

This bar has long been a customer favourite for its luxurious floral scent and nourishing properties. Made with French rose clay, it offers a gentle detox while leaving skin soft and supple.

While the current design features a red and white swirl — which, we admit, has occasionally been mistaken for looking a bit like a cut of meat — we’re already working on a beautiful redesign. Soon, Rose Garden will be a solid light pink bar, more in line with the softness and elegance of its scent and ingredients.

🥈 2nd Place: Northern Light

Key ingredients: Peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils, shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil, French green clay, activated charcoal

Northern Light is our most invigorating soap — the one you reach for when you want to feel fresh, alert, and deeply clean. Alongside its crisp scent from peppermint and eucalyptus, it’s packed with activated charcoal, a powerful ingredient known for drawing out impurities, reducing excess oil, and helping to clear clogged pores.

This bar is a favourite for those who like their soap with a refreshing kick and a deep-cleansing feel.

🥉 3rd Place: Harmony

Key ingredients: Calendula, chamomile, shea butter, olive oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil

If your skin is sensitive, dry, or easily irritated, Harmony might just be your new best friend. This calming blend of calendula and chamomile is ideal for delicate skin — and for anyone who loves a mild, soothing scent.

It’s often chosen for those with sensitive, eczema-prone skin, or anyone seeking peace and balance in their skincare routine. Customers love how soft and hydrated their skin feels after use, without any tightness or residue.

🌿 4th Place: Salty Nettle

Key ingredients: Dead Sea salt, nettle, shea butter, olive oil, coconut oil

Don’t let its fourth-place spot fool you — Salty Nettle has a cult following. This bar is a powerhouse of minerals and plant-based benefits, combining Dead Sea salt (known for its detoxifying properties) with nettle, a traditional remedy for inflammation and blemishes.

It’s loved by those with oily or problematic skin, and perfect for anyone who wants a deeper clean without any synthetic additives. The scent is fresh and earthy, and the results speak for themselves.

✨ 5th Place: Golden Glow

Key ingredients: Turmeric, raw honey, shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil

Golden Glow lives up to its name, leaving skin with a soft, radiant finish. The turmeric helps brighten dull or uneven skin tone, while raw honey adds a natural antibacterial and deeply moisturising boost.

It’s a favourite for those who want a natural bar that helps their skin feel clear, smooth, and glowing — without any synthetic ingredients or added fragrance.

An ordinary day behind Quantock Inspiration

Discover the Extraordinary in the Everyday: Nature’s Role in Inspiring Unique Crafts

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to overlook the subtle beauty that surrounds us, but for those of us who find inspiration in nature, the ordinary becomes a canvas for extraordinary creativity. Nestled in the picturesque Quantock Hills, I draw on this natural beauty to craft unique handmade gifts that capture the essence of the landscape. From the calming influence of a serene sunset to the vibrant burst of wildflowers, each element of nature inspires a fresh perspective and fuels the creation of exclusive items like bottle lamps and wood slice coasters. Join me on a journey through the rhythms of my daily routine, where mindfulness and thoughtful observation transform the simple into the inspiring, and see what it can become—a celebration of nature and the art of gift giving.

Embracing Nature’s Inspiration

Nature’s beauty serves as an endless source of inspiration for artists and craftspeople. In this section, I’ll show how everyday moments in nature can spark extraordinary creations and delve into the essence of handmade crafting.

Everyday Moments, Extraordinary Creations

The world around us is filled with subtle wonders that often go unnoticed. By cultivating mindfulness and keen observation, we can transform these everyday moments into extraordinary inspirations for our crafts.

A gentle breeze rustling through leaves, the intricate pattern of frost on a window pane, or the vibrant hues of a sunset can all serve as catalysts for creativity. These fleeting instances, when captured in our minds and hearts, become the foundation for unique handmade gifts.

At Quantock Inspiration, I believe in the power of these small, everyday miracles. By embracing the beauty of our surroundings, we infuse our creations with a sense of wonder and connection to the natural world.

The Essence of Handmade Crafting

Handmade crafting is more than just creating objects; it’s a deeply personal and rewarding process that connects the maker to their materials and the recipient of the finished piece.

The essence of handmade lies in its uniqueness. No two items are ever exactly alike, each bearing the subtle imprint of the crafter’s touch. This individuality is what makes handmade gifts so special and cherished.

Crafting by hand also allows for a level of customization and attention to detail that mass-produced items simply can’t match. It’s an opportunity to pour love, care, and creativity into every aspect of the creation process.

Crafting Unique Gifts

At the heart of my work is the desire to create truly unique gifts that capture the spirit of nature and bring joy to both givers and receivers. Let’s explore how I draw inspiration from the natural world and infuse each piece with its own story.

From Hues of Sunsets to Vibrant Blooms

The Quantock Hills provide a rich palette of colors and textures that inspire my creations. From the soft, warm hues of sunsets to the vibrant blooms of wildflowers, nature’s diversity is reflected in my handmade gifts.

I carefully select materials, colours and wildlife images that evoke the beauty of the landscape. For example, our wood slice coasters feature the elusive Hedgehog, while our bottle lamps could capture the ethereal glow of twilight.

By channeling these natural elements into my crafts, I create pieces that not only serve a functional purpose but also bring a touch of the outdoors into homes and offices.

Exclusive Pieces with a Story

Every handmade item I create at Quantock Inspiration comes with its own unique story. These narratives are woven into the very fabric of my creations, making them truly exclusive gifts.

My crafting process often begins with a walk through the Quantock Hills, where I gather inspiration and sometimes even materials. This connection to the land imbues each piece with a sense of place and history.

I believe that sharing these stories enhances the value of our gifts. When you give a Quantock Inspiration creation, you’re not just offering an object, but a piece of our local landscape and the creative journey behind it. As well as my website, you can also find my exclusive pieces on my eBay store.

The Joy of Creative Expression

Creating handmade gifts is not just about the end product; it’s about the joy and fulfillment found in the creative process itself. In this section, I’ll show how mindfulness plays a role in our crafting and how I transform everyday objects into works of art.

Mindfulness in Making Wood Slice Coasters

Crafting wood slice coasters is a practice in mindfulness, requiring focus, patience, and an appreciation for the natural beauty of wood.

The process begins with selecting the four perfect slices of wood, each with its unique grain patterns and imperfections. As I sand the surface, we’re attuned to the texture changing beneath our fingers, smoothing rough edges while preserving the wood’s character.

Applying finishes and decorations becomes a meditative act, each brushstroke or embellishment added with intention and care. This mindful approach not only results in beautiful coasters but also brings a sense of calm and satisfaction to the crafting process.

Bottle Lamps: See What It Can Become

My motto, “See what it can become,” is perfectly embodied in my bottle lamp creations. These unique lamps transform ordinary glass bottles into extraordinary lighting fixtures, showcasing the potential for beauty in everyday objects.

The process of creating a bottle lamp involves several steps:

  1. Selecting the perfect bottle, considering its shape, color, and potential for illumination.

  2. Carefully prepping the bottle, cleaning and smoothing

  3. applying the image with a decoupage technique

  4. Finishing with our traditional sparkly finish

The result is a one-of-a-kind lamp that serves as both a functional light source and a piece of art. You can see some of my bottle lamp creations in action on my TikTok channel.

Loving all of your support – much love
