How to Choose the Perfect Handcrafted Jewellery Gift for Someone You Love

Nine pieces of jewellery available to buy from Jude Webster Jewellery

How to choose the perfect gift

Finding the perfect Christmas gift can be tricky, can’t it? You want something thoughtful, personal, and a little bit special — a gift that says I really thought about you. Jewellery is wonderful for that, especially when it’s handcrafted with care and meaning.

If you’re thinking of giving a piece of jewellery this Christmas, here are a few simple ways to choose something your partner, friend or mum will truly love.

 Think About Their Style

Take a moment to notice what they usually wear. Do they love simple silver pieces, or do they prefer something bolder? Are they drawn to classic shapes, or do they like a touch of texture and movement?

If your mum tends to wear the same silver pendant every day, a pair of handcrafted earrings in a similar tone could be perfect. If your partner loves stacking rings, why not add one with a unique hammered finish or a hint of gold detail?

Little clues like these will help you find something that feels just right for them.

 Choose Something Meaningful

Jewellery often carries a story — that’s what makes it so special. Perhaps you’d like to choose a piece inspired by nature, something that reflects their love of the outdoors or the Yorkshire countryside. Or maybe a design that symbolises connection, strength or growth.

When a piece has meaning, it becomes more than just something pretty to wear — it becomes a reminder of the moment and the person who gave it.

 Go for Quality Over Quantity

Handcrafted jewellery, made to last, is a gift that can be treasured for years. I make each piece with care from recycled sterling silver and sometimes gold, designed to be worn and loved — never just worn once and forgotten.

Choosing a handmade piece means you’re giving something truly one-of-a-kind — no mass production, no shortcuts, just honest craftsmanship.

 Add a Personal Touch

A handwritten note, a special card, or a simple story about why you chose that piece could make your gift even more meaningful.

Every order from me arrives carefully wrapped in eco-friendly packaging, ready for gifting — so you can give it straight away, knowing it’s been made and wrapped with love. I also offer a gift wrapping service for those that require it.

 A Final Thought

At the end of the day, the perfect gift doesn’t have to be grand or complicated. It’s the thought, care, and story behind it that make it special.

Whether you’re choosing for your partner, a dear friend or your mum, I hope you find a piece that feels personal and heartfelt — something they’ll treasure long after Christmas has passed.

You can browse my latest handcrafted jewellery collection over on The British Craft House (see link below) — and if you’re not sure what to pick, I’m always happy to help you choose.

What Is Silver, Exactly? A Guide to Recycled, Sterling, Fine & Argentium Silver Jewellery

Jude Webster Jewellery logo and some silver commission pieces

What Is Silver?

(Exploring sterling, fine, and Argentium silver — and why I choose recycled materials for my handcrafted jewellery.)

Introduction

Silver has always held a special place in jewellery making — timeless, radiant, and full of character. But not all silver is the same. From traditional sterling to the purity of fine silver and the innovation of Argentium, each has its own story and strengths.

At Jude Webster Jewellery, based in North Yorkshire, I create one-of-a-kind pieces using recycled sterling silver, fine silver, and occasionally Argentium silver — all crafted with care, respect, and a deep appreciation for the materials and their origins.

Sterling Silver — The Classic Choice

Sterling silver is perhaps the best-known form of silver used in jewellery. It’s made up of 92.5% pure silver, with the remaining 7.5% usually copper. That small addition gives it strength and durability — essential for pieces that are worn every day.

Pros:

• Strong and durable for everyday wear

• Beautiful, bright shine

• Perfect for rings, bangles, and other regular-use pieces

Cons:

• Can tarnish over time (though it’s easy to clean)

• Slightly less “white” in colour than fine or Argentium silver

I love working with sterling silver because it holds up beautifully in daily wear yet still carries that unmistakable warmth and lustre of silver.

Fine Silver — Pure and Gentle

Fine silver is the purest form used in jewellery, made up of 99.9% silver. It has a wonderfully soft, buttery surface and a gentle, almost glowing sheen.

Pros:

• Hypoallergenic and naturally resistant to tarnish

• Soft, luminous finish and colour

• Ideal for delicate or detailed pieces

Cons:

• Softer and more prone to scratching or bending

• Less suited for heavy-duty wear (like rings or bangles)

I sometimes use fine silver for small, detailed work  such as a bezel setting or where I want a slightly softer aesthetic, such as in hand-formed pendants.

Fine Silver Clay — Modern Alchemy

One of my favourite materials to work with is fine silver clay., It starts as a soft, malleable clay made from recycled fine silver particles mixed with a natural binder and water. This allows it to be shaped, carved, and textured by hand — perfect for creating organic, one-of-a-kind designs.

Once the piece is dry and refined, it’s fired in a kiln or with a torch. During firing, the binder burns away, and the silver particles fuse together to form solid 99.9% pure fine silver. The result is real, precious metal — just like any other fine silver, but formed through an incredibly tactile, creative process.

Pros:

• Made from recycled silver, making it an eco-conscious choice

• Ideal for detailed textures, imprints, and organic shapes

• Fires into pure fine silver (99.9%)

Cons:

• Slightly softer than sterling, so best for pendants, earrings, and keepsake pieces

• Requires careful drying and firing to achieve the best finish

Silver clay allows me to work more intuitively — shaping and forming by hand, rather than sawing and soldering. It’s a wonderful blend of traditional silversmithing and modern innovation, and it means no two pieces will ever be the same.

Argentium Silver — The Modern Innovator

Argentium silver is a more modern form of silver that takes the traditional sterling alloy and improves upon it. It’s available in two grades — Argentium 935 and Argentium 960 — both of which have a higher silver content than standard 925 sterling silver. Instead of being alloyed purely with copper, Argentium includes a small amount of germanium, which gives it some remarkable properties.

Pros:

• Highly tarnish-resistant, staying brighter for longer

• Whiter and more reflective than traditional sterling

• Easier to care for — a light polish restores its shine beautifully

• More environmentally friendly to produce, often made using recycled silver

Cons:

• Slightly more expensive and not as widely available as sterling

• Behaves a little differently under heat, so it requires careful handling when soldering

Argentium is a wonderful example of how traditional materials can evolve. It combines the beauty and versatility of sterling silver with the low-maintenance qualities we all appreciate — making it an excellent choice for modern, responsibly made jewellery.

Where Silver Comes From

Silver is mined all over the world — often as a by-product of copper, lead, or gold mining. Unfortunately, traditional mining can have a heavy environmental impact, disturbing landscapes and ecosystems. That’s one of the reasons I choose to use recycled silver wherever possible.

My recycled sterling comes from trusted UK suppliers who refine and reclaim silver from scrap jewellery, electronics, and other silver-bearing materials. The reclaimed silver is purified to the same standard as newly mined metal — meaning there’s no difference in quality, only in conscience.

Why Recycled Matters

Working with recycled silver allows me to create pieces that not already tell a story but continue, giving new life to materials that already exist. It aligns with my belief that beauty should never come at the cost of the planet. Every piece I make carries that quiet intention — care, respect, and a deep appreciation for the world that inspires it.

In conclusion:

Silver isn’t just silver. It’s history, craftsmanship, and responsibility — all bound together in metal that has captured human imagination for millennia. Whether it’s sterling, fine, Argentium, or fine silver clay, it’s a joy to work with — especially when it’s reborn from recycled roots.

Why Choose Handcrafted Jewellery

Here at Relic, you will find handcrafted sustainable eco-conscious jewellery. We are a UK-based independent business.

So, why should you choose to buy handcrafted artisanal pieces?

Special Pieces Made with Love, Intention, and Soul Purpose

At Relic, all pieces are hand-crafted with the utmost respect for the process. Each and every piece is unique and has its own vibration and energy. While creating these pieces, ceremony and ritual are used to create a reverent process with intention and love. These vibrations are then a part of the piece.

If you are ordering a Made to Order item and you would like to make a special request for a specific intention to be imbued with your piece during the making process, please get in touch on the contact page.

Ethical and Sustainable Considerations

In many ways, the process of designing and making a piece of jewellery is as crucial as the final product. Creating from start to finish fosters a deep connection to each piece through the creative process, and means that each element of the business can be tied together under the same core values.

Put simply, big commercial sellers source factory or machine-made jewellery which does not have the quality, beauty, skill, or love that a handcrafted piece has. Often those items will not have been sourced fairly or equitably, and will have a detrimental impact on the planet.

Designed and Made in the UK

You’ll often see jewellery described as “designed in the UK” — but that usually means it’s made elsewhere, often in large factories overseas. At Relic, every piece is both designed and handcrafted in the UKusing traditional techniques and mindfully sourced materials. It’s a slower process, but it means fair pay, lower carbon footprints, and transparency from design to delivery. The result is jewellery that holds real depth and intention — not just in how it looks, but in how it’s made.

Quality and Value

Handcrafted jewellery will typically last much longer because of the quality of the materials and craftsmanship which went into making it, and will therefore keep its value.

The dedication to designing and making jewellery as an ancient craft results in timeless pieces of jewellery, crafted with precision and care. Precious metals and stones are carefully selected.

Recycled Metals

The use of recycled metals helps protect the planet by decreasing the demand for new mining, and offering metals a chance to be cherished anew.

Your Piece is Uniquely Yours

No one piece of handmade jewellery is ever truly the same as another, nor can it ever be ‘machine perfect’, and therein lies one of its most beautiful and inspiring aspects – the uniqueness and the human touch which you can only find in handcrafted pieces.

By purchasing handmade jewellery, you are guaranteed something special. Even if a design is recreated, it will always be unique due to the creative process. It will be made with care, and love.

Your Support is Genuinely Appreciated

You can be sure that there is so much gratitude for every purchase of a handmade item from any artisan, and whenever you support an independent business.

Thank you for valuing the craftsmanship of your jewellery and selecting ethical, sustainable, handcrafted pieces created to promote heart-centered living, to be cherished for years to come.

5 Things I’ve Learnt From Teaching Creative Workshops

Three women sit together at a craft venue enjoying a bead weaving workshop

When I first began teaching bead weaving workshops, I expected it to be mostly about sharing a skill that I love.  But they’re so much more than that….they’re about slowing down and connecting with others.

Learning a new skill can be challenging at times, and some people arrive a little unsure about what they’ll manage to achieve during the workshop – Will they master it enough to be able to take something home with them? Will they enjoy the making process? Will the other people attending the workshop have more experience than they have?

So … what have I learnt??

1. Many people don’t see themselves as ‘creative’, but they are.  Creativity isn’t about perfection.  It’s about the joy of making something with your own hands.

2. My workshops offer rare time to slow down.  No screens, no rush, just quiet concentration.  It’s not just about the jewellery making.  The repetitive rhythm of bead weaving calms a busy mind – a reminder that slowing down and doing something for ourselves isn’t indulgent, it’s essential for our wellbeing.

3. I love watching people create something personal, choosing colours that remind them of something, or designs that hold meaning.  Every handmade piece made in my workshops carries a story, and it’s great to hear it!

4. There’s a special kind of ease that comes with creating side by side.  Even the groups may that seem quieter to begin with, end up chatting, laughing and encouraging each other.  Connection and community are so important, and what better way to meet and make new friends 🙂

5. I wanted to give back, so I chose to donate a percentage of proceeds from every workshop to the NSPCC, supporting the amazing work that they do in supporting vulnerable children and their families, a charity close to my heart.

If you’re in, or close to East Sussex, and think you’d like to try bead weaving, I’d love to hear from you – no experience necessary, just bring a pair of glasses if you need them (the beads are tiny!) and refreshments will be provided!

Meet the Maker

Deborah and Archie

Hello and thank you for visiting and seeing a glimpse of my passion.

My love of making handcrafted jewellery started with a day course in Dorset creating silver rings and bangles and has continued ever since. I now create individual ‘one of a kind’ jewellery that is perfect for those who love organic, handmade silver and copper jewellery either to wear themselves or gift to friends and family.

All my pieces are designed and created in my little home studio in Berkshire, UK. I work with sterling silver, precious metal clay, copper and brass and add semi-precious gemstones, crystal and gemstone beads for a touch of sparkle and added interest. Each piece will be slightly different so you know you are receiving a truly handmade piece.

Texture is added to my work with hammers, metal stamps, etching, fusing and reticulation, fold forming and on occasions a rolling mill. I love creating simple, wearable jewellery suitable for any occasion. I take my inspiration from the world around me and often use real leaves, flowers, shells, lace, paper in my designs…anything really that has a texture and can be transferred to metal!

If you are buying for a gift I can ship direct to the recipient with the item gift wrapped and a short handwritten gift note added. Shipping within the UK is included.

All my jewellery complies with the UK hallmarking regulations and I have my own maker’s hallmark registered with the London Assay Office.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.

About Jewellery handcrafted by Pauline

Hi, I’m Pauline, I love to make jewellery and creating new designs. All my jewellery is designed and handcrafted by me from my home in Cheltenham using intricate wire-wrapping and weaving techniques.

Wire wrapping is one of the oldest techniques for making jewellery.

I have always loved jewellery and a few years ago I attended wire jewellery making courses at my local college. I absolutely loved the courses and became totally hooked.

I was amazed how beautiful and intricate jewellery could be made using wire and beads and a few jewellery making tools. There is no soldering or heating of  metal in this method of jewellery making.

My jewellery and decorations are individually created  using wire wrapping and wire weaving techniques. I use a variety of materials including sterling silver wire, silver filled wire,  copper wire, silver plated fixings and a variety of beautiful beads.

My designs are often inspired by nature, I find the shapes in nature amazing. Among my pieces you will find leaf shapes, flowers, dragonflies, bees, and birds. I also love to make hearts.

When I have a design in mind I will sometimes but not always make a very rough sketch. I take a length of wire either .8mm or 1mm wire and begin to shape the wire using jewellery making tools and mandrels. Once I am happy with shape I will gently hammer with a chasing hammer on a steel block to harden and strengthen the wire shape. I use .4mm wire to create wire weaving designs or to add beads.  The wire is finished with a burr tool to smooth and a wrapped loop to secure. The completed piece is gently polished with a polishing cloth.

I hope you enjoy browsing in my shop and if you have any questions please contact me.

About Me & Nature by Day

Hi,

I’m Dee also known as Debz. I make unique handmade silver jewellery which is inspired by Mother Nature’s amazing textures and designs. All my work is made by hand, by me, from Silver Metal Clay which is 99.9% pure silver and is a recycled material, I’ll tell you a little more about this amazing medium below.

How it all started

I started making jewellery several years ago after my twin sister bought me a Metal Clay course for Christmas. I immediately fell in love with this fascinating process and knew this was what I was destined to do.

I’ve always been creative and fascinated by the worlds flora and fauna. I went to Art College way back when, but I failed to follow my creative heart for my career and instead worked in luxury retail for over 25 years. While working with some of the worlds most beautiful luxury products, I always dreamed of one day being able to share my own designs and creations with my own precious customers and now I am through Nature by Day.

My Collection

Mother Nature is the greatest designer of all, nothing a human can create is more beautiful than that of nature and this is why I try to recreate natures designs. Sea shells dominate my collection. I’m passionate about them not only because they are among some of the most remarkable designs found in nature, but also because of their spiritual and magical powers which have been used throughout time all over the world. Shells are linked with the feminine energy, where shells are used to draw the things you desire into your life. Each shell or symbol of a shell brings and possess it’s own bit of magic so my silver shells make the perfect gift for every woman if they need a bit of extra power and magic in their life as well as a beautiful piece of handmade jewellery.

Metal Clay is the perfect medium for capturing every intricate detail that Mother Nature puts into her gorgeous designs. I make every item individually by hand so every piece is unique in it’s own little way. All the findings and other components I use to make my finished pieces are made from Sterling Silver.

I make your orders in my lovely home in the Herefordshire countryside that I share with my Scottish husband Ken and my little rescue dog, Tahira.

My real passion is creating and making commissions or personalised designs for you, my customers, there is nothing more gratifying and humbling for me than to make that special piece of jewellery that you can treasure forever.

All my jewellery is beautifully gift wrapped in my eco-friendly branded gift boxes tied with ribbon so they make perfect gifts for every occasion or just a treat for yourself! I’m also happy to add a handwritten note if you want me to send something directly to a friend or loved one.

I welcome orders from all over the world.

Commissions

Did you find a shell on a special holiday or on your honeymoon that you’d love made into silver? Does a loved one have a special tree or plant that you’d like a permanent piece of to wear? If so, I’d be delighted to create a customised and personal design for you, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me or if you simply have a question about my jewellery please email me at: deeyoung@naturebyday.com.

Silver Metal Clay

Metal Clay is exactly that, silver in clay form, tiny little packets of clay. The clay is made from tiny particles of reclaimed silver mixed with an organic binder and water. You can shape, mould and sculpt the clay like you would with any other type of clay.

The clay is then dried, once dried you can refine it further by sanding, carving, filing etc. until you have the perfect piece. The clay then needs to be fired in a tiny little kiln.

Once fired you are left with pure Fine Silver which is classed as 99.9% pure verses Sterling Silver which is 92.5% pure.

Once fired you can then use normal silversmithing techniques such as soldering to complete the pieces.

The last process like with any jewellery is polishing, I use 7 different steps, all done by hand to polish all my pieces to ensure I don’t lose any of the lovely detail.

Thank you for reading my about page.

Happy browsing and shopping,

Dee.
