Lerwick & Bains Beach – Mixed Media Seascape (Collaboration)

This atmospheric artwork captures the sweeping shoreline of Bains Beach, Lerwick, a much-loved stretch of coast made instantly recognisable through its appearance in a popular TV series. Looking across the restless sea towards Lerwick’s historic waterfront, the piece reflects the movement, colour and drama of Shetland’s ever-changing light and weather.

The foreground sea is created in layered mixed media, with flowing resin techniques used to build depth, motion and translucency, echoing waves rolling in over the rocks. The townscape beyond is detailed and characterful, grounding the work firmly in place and offering a strong sense of Shetland identity.

This artwork is a collaboration between Sarah Kay and Anne Barron, bringing together complementary styles and a shared love of Shetland’s coastline. The result is a unique, one-off piece that balances energy and calm, sea and settlement, tradition and contemporary technique.

Bains Beach Painting.

This piece is a collaboration between 2 artists- Anne Barton and Sarah Kay. During a conversation one day, I suggested to Anne that our shared artistic style, colour palettes and passion for the sea might result in truly special collaboration. This simple idea led to a new collaboration that has now blossomed into a unique collection of one-off pieces. Inspired by my passion for snorkelling and underwater photography, Anne and I combined our talents: she paints iconic Shetland landscapes on the upper canvas, while I create scenes below the waterline, blending realistic and dreamlike imagery.

This painting was created using acrylic paint and clear resin on wood board, it has been framed using a white wood frame. Overall measurements- 55x 45 2.5 cm.
