The Velvet Hedgehog

Vendor Biography

Hi, I’m Clare, welcome to The Velvet Hedgehog, where I create joyful, handcrafted gifts made with love.

Many moons ago I was a Quantity Surveyor in London but I left my career to focus on family after my first child was born. When our girls were small my husband and I designed and built our own home – never again! Once the house was finished I decided to do something for me that fits in with being a Mum to two girls.

With a lifelong love of crafting, drawing and animals , I found joy in hand sewing, leading me to create The Velvet Hedgehog. I enjoy doing small blanket stitches around my animals and adding details with other stitches and tiny beads.

The name The Velvet Hedgehog is a tribute to my eldest daughters childhood obsession for hedgehogs and my love for soft, luxurious feel of velvet.

My family’s love woodland animals has inspired me to make lots of designs that include hedgehogs, foxes, badgers and rabbits I have recently expanded my range of animals to include highland cows, puffins (always popular), ducks and seahorses.

I use velvet ribbons in my designs adding a touch of luxury to my glasses cases, stretchy bookmarks  and book sleeves.

When I am not sewing I can often be found with a mug of tea (always made in a teapot) and a good book. I always read in bed and often fall asleep loosing my place in my book – so my stretchy bookmarks where made using elasticated velvet ribbon so your place is kept even if you drop the book.

I originally thought that my bookmarks would be popular with keen readers but this review blew my mind “My daughter is not a keen reader but this beautiful bookmark definitely brings a smile to her face when she gets her book out. I would definitely recommend for any reluctant readers'”

Please feel free to message me if you would like to ask me about making something bespoke for you.

I hope you find something you like.
