Meet the Maker – The Humble Woodshed

Hello, I’m Mike — the hands, heart and soul behind The Humble Woodshed.

After taking early retirement at 62, I found myself searching for purpose and a quieter sense of balance. In 2019, with the incredible support of my family, an excellent GP, and the help of therapy and medication, I began the journey of rebuilding and rediscovering myself. Reconnecting with my lifelong passion for working with wood became more than a pastime — it became a grounding and meaningful part of my recovery.

That’s how The Humble Woodshed came to life.

Working from two small sheds at the bottom of my garden, I now spend my days crafting one-of-a-kind pieces using nature’s finest materials. As a trained carpenter, I’ve always been drawn to the character and quiet story held within each piece of timber. Sometimes that story is gently enhanced with carefully poured resin — adding depth, contrast or strength — but the natural beauty of the wood is always allowed to lead.

Every clock, table, candle holder or home accent I make is entirely handmade. There’s no mass production here — just honest craftsmanship, made slowly and with care. Wherever possible, I source local and sustainable hardwoods, and reuse packaging and offcuts to keep my work as considered and environmentally mindful as I can.

What began as a therapeutic outlet has grown into something far more meaningful. Sharing these pieces, and knowing they become part of someone’s home, is a genuine joy and privilege.
