Tudor Velvet Collections – a Touch of the Renaissance with a Contemporary Vibe by Magwitchery

My Tudor Velvet Collections are a contemporary interpretation of some of  the colours and textures of the fabrics and jewellery in Renaissance and Pre-Raphaelite paintings.  They feature faceted natural gemstones (all my gemstones are natural precious and semi-precious stones) set in smooth broad gold bezels against sterling silver, etched by me to my own designs, based on nature and antique lace.

My Moss Velvet collection features Green Tourmaline in the colours of deep pools like the green of the stream Ophelia drowned in or into which Narcissus stared at his reflection.  The colours of the deep forest and the bright spring.

My Rose Velvet collection features Pink Tourmaline in old rose and tulip pink shades, like old faded velvet with a flash of sugar pink.  Colours of warmth, of optimism, of love.

What inspires my glass designs – travelling with my beloved camera (and Bob ❤️)

In normal times Bob and I spend a couple of months a year travelling round Europe in our motorhome, Tandy with scooter, Kisbee,  in the boot.

We also usually sneak in a winter week or two somewhere warm and exotic but have to fly there. We tell people we are doing it while we can, spending the kid’s inheritance and it’s what we do.
I never go anywhere without my beloved Panasonic Lumix camera hanging round my neck … I wore the shutter out on my last one  ! Thank goodness for digital cameras.

I love to travel but I also love making my glass, addicted really, and as soon as we return from our travels I can’t wait to get my glass cutter out to make the new designs inspired by the wonderful sights we have seen.

I thought you might like to see some of the places we have been and the suncatcher designs they inspired.

I’ve just listed these Easter Cards.  What do you think?  I hope you like them!!

I’ve machine stitched a border and hand sewn the button embellishments.  There’s a range of lovely Easter colours available.

As we’re all still restricted because of covid, it looks like we won’t be able to gather together this Easter, so why not send your loved ones a card?!

I can handwrite a message and send it direct for you – send some love this Easter.

I hope you have a safe and happy one

All About myself and HRJ!

Welcome!  Let me start by telling you a little bit about myself!

I’m Fallon, a thirty-something year old, living in Hertfordshire with my husband and daughter.  I’m an avid crafter, have been all my life, trying my hand at many different activities for fun and making numerous things for my daughter and as gifts.   I also love home baking and drinking copious cups of tea!  I have a degree in photography and shoot freelance baby and children photography (when global pandemics don’t get in the way!)

I’ve been using polymer clay since I was a child, initially making teeny tiny food for my dolls house.  My husband bought me a food themed polymer clay book many years ago, and after experimenting with cakes and sweets, decided to start selling the increasing number of makes I produced, mainly to clear some space!!  The rest is history, HRJ was born in May 2011!

I chose to continue the foodie theme as I love all things quirky and retro – I’m an eighties child, so the retro food you find at old school birthday parties is an absolute favourite at mine – plates of iced ring biscuits, fondant fancies, etc – whenever we have a birthday at home, we always have that kind of tea party to celebrate!  I think the theme brings a sense of nostalgia to childhood/good memories from the past (my allsorts sweetie bracelet was one of my very first makes, and is still so popular today, with the young and old!). I’ve now also started to branch out into homeware and decorations…but more on that in my next blog post!

Inspiration strikes me at any time – I generally get distracted by anything cute and quirky, especially colourful eye catching things.  I love kawaii styles, and have incorporated it into some of my pieces.  Current trends inspire me, as well as actual foods; being a keen baker, I follow lots of baking accounts on social media, and sometimes try to recreate something edible into clay form!  I also have had many commissions and special requests over the years, and some I have felt would be really popular, so have then made these into pieces for my shop too.

I joined TBCH in early 2020 and love the unique community of makers here, they are all so helpful and friendly, with each and every one making beautiful high quality handcrafted items.

Oh and if you’re wondering…my favourite biscuit to dunk in my cup of tea is….a chocolate bourbon or Lotus Biscoff!

What is Pyrography?

The word “pyrography” means “writing with fire”.  Often the term is used  interchangeably with the term wood burning.  However, technically the word can be used to describe any type of writing or drawing with a hot tool, and there are some amazing artists out there who pyro on to leather, bones and even paper!

All my pyrography (so far!) has been on wood.

What does a pyrography tool look like?

pyrography tools

There are many different types of pyrography tool with fixed or interchangeable tips.  The main two I use are a basic pen tool with 2 heat settings and a professional tool with a much wider choice of heat settings.

Simple:  this basic pen tool has lots of different tips that can be screwed into the top and the pen acts a bit like a soldering iron as it heats the end up.  This is the type of tool I started out with and is great for beginners.  I still use the pen tool if I have lots of dark areas to burn.

Professional:  I have a RazorTip burner and it is amazing for detail and shading. You have the choice of fixed tip pens or interchangeable tips to choose from and there is an abundance of different tips to choose from.  The temperature control lets you have more control over shading.

How do you design on wood?

pyrography work in progress

If I am burning a simple image that I am very familiar with – eg a sunflower, I will draw the design in pencil directly onto the wood before starting the burn.

For text, or more complex designs I will first design on the computer before printing the design out.  I then transfer the design outline on to the wood using graphite paper.  I then burn over the outlines and use the print out of the design to help guide me when I do the shading.

Can you burn on any type of wood?

types of wood

Yes and no! It depends on what you want to burn.  In theory if the wood is sanded well enough you could burn on it, but depending on the type of wood you’d struggle to get good detail and might be limited to simple blocky designs.  I love to burn on Ash, Sycamore and Bass for detailed work but have frequently used Oak, Cedar and Pine for big chunky signs.  You can also only burn on untreated wood as you really don’t want to be inhaling fumes from paint, varnish or woodstain!

How long does it take?

It varies a lot! A freehand sunflower on a bookmark might only take 20 minutes to burn, whereas a detailed rose or big sign would take hours.  It also depends on how much prep the wood needs before and after.  Some items will need sanding and cutting before, other items needs lots of coats of sealant or varnish or stain after which needs to dry in between coats.

Take a look at this video of me making a sign to see all the different stages a bespoke sign goes through.

What items do you have for sale?

Please take a look at my British Craft House shop for all the currently available items.  I have a wide range of products available including:  Gifts for Him, Gifts for Her, Storage, Boxes, Signs, Gifts for Kids and much more!

Happy Easter! Quirky Easter makes

So it’s another weird year but one thing that it has done is enable people like me that make handmade gifts an opportunity to really spend some new found free time doing what we love most – creating! I am super excited about the twenty something new gifts I’ve worked on this year which will hopefully be photographed next week and listed soon after. For now though, I wanted to share my Easter makes! Next year I think I’d like to look into some decorations too but this time I’ve made some card prints, felt cards and my favourite thing to make – my felt magnets in a matchbox!

cute chick easter card

So, what can you expect from my new designs? I hope it’s the same thing you like about the whole of Ice Cream Cat! They’re bright, cheerful, quirky, funny and punny! I always bear in mind when making my cards and gifts that my goal is to put a smile on the face of the people who receives them – both my customers and the person they’re gifting them to.

easter egg gift

For my new Easter magnet in a matchboxes, I really wanted it to be a fun alternative to a traditional greeting card or gift, including for those who are unable to eat chocolate eggs for dietary reasons. You could pop in a £5 note, a poem, or a little message to make it eggstra special (sorry I couldn’t resist)! As an added bonus they’re the perfect size for a letterbox gift.

Cute funny easter card

For some reason I’d never really drawn much in the way of rabbits before but I was happy to do so and love how cute they turn out! Perhaps some different coloured bunnies for next year or a ‘hoppy easter’ message since I do love a silly pun.

So! Whilst it’s still a strange year and we might not get to see our loved ones this Easter, we can still let them know we’re thinking of them and we care. Be it through sending a card or gift, or just a phone call.

Have a lovely Easter everyone!

New from Re-Energize You-Energy Landscape Art

Durdle Door Art Print
Sunset on the East River NYC A4 Print
Summer Sunset over Stokes Bay A4 Print framed lifestyle

Have you ever just wanted to escape? Step off, delve into a new direction, swim in a azure blue ocean, breathe in the vitality of fresh mountain air, or perhaps gaze ahead at all of the possibilities available in a vibrant big city?

Me too…

It is this essence that inspired me to paint these acrylic paintings against the backdrop of the most challenging restrictions to our freedom.

So what is energy art? Of course, all art can move us, shift our perspectives and bring new understanding about ourselves and our surroundings. However, Energy Art consciously does this as I lovingly attune these paintings to flow reiki energy  to calm, inspire and uplift the recipient and their home.

All have a different theme, from mountain, to water, to city to skyline and reflect the beauty of our world, whether captured in a sunset or a reflection. You will find peace from the colours within these images as well as enjoying the journey they take you on.

Each are A4 sized and are printed on 300gsm cardstock. You can buy as unframed or in my chosen silver or gold frame as a ready made gift.

I hope that our beautiful World opens up to greater possibilities for us all soon and that adventures will positively enrich our lives again once more!

Start believing…

love

Bevart designs and ‘Wabi Sabi’ a Japanese philosophy

What inspires to me to make my jewellery pieces.

Hello, I am Beverley from Bevart designs.

I am an artist that has been inspired to make jewellery from my love of art. So in short, my jewellery creations have been inspired from my artworks.

I love wood and colour and have combined the two elements to make beautiful art inspired jewellery for you to wear.

Whilst doing my degree back in 2008 whooooa! long time ago.

I was fascinated by making something that was quite ordinary very beautiful, I incorporated copper pipe and wire and velvet fabrics to bring my 3-D relief paintings and sculptures to life.

The photo is a piece that I created for my fine art degree, I embedded a large ornate mirror, red velvet and copper pipe. This work was made in response to self Indulgence and decadence.

Artwork – 5ft x 3ft plaster, paint, velvet, copper pipe, mirror and varnish.

Entitled  – ‘Indulge’

SOLD

Fast forward to now, in my fine artwork I use gold leaf and mark making using unconventional tools. My ethos in my creative life is ‘Making the ordinary beautiful’ a few years ago I discovered WabiSabi a Japanese philosophy and way of life.

The Japanese people embrace things that would be normally deemed as useless or boring or very ordinary, old, cracked or broken, they fix and make beautiful. I am fascinated with that as a thing in its self, so the way that I use WabiSabi and making the ordinary beautiful into my artwork, is that I embrace things that could possibly go wrong, like, unintentional marks, the drips from the paint the knots in the wood!

I fix good with love, polishing and gold/silver and rose gold leaf.

The pink and green artwork photograph is a painting that I made a couple of years ago, I have used wax and mark making to create this ‘Indian Summer’ inspired piece. We went on holiday to Goa, whilst on a market trip we met a lady selling the most amazing fabrics, she was wearing the most exquisite sari, my painting was inspired by this trip.

Art work – wax, oil paints and gold leaf, painted on board.

Entitled – ‘Indian Summer’

This is just a little insight into the jewellery making and the things that inspire me to be creative.

Bevart designs creations! are inspired by my paintings, travel, and WabiSabi.

Thankyou Beverley x
