Making in miniature!

My creative style is known as CAS in the card making world – clean and simple!  My designs are pretty minimal and I like to go for a natural, rustic feel letting the message speak for itself.  My cards quite often feature one central, focal piece or embellishment so they aren’t too distracting.  And wherever I can, I try to make the main embellishment by hand.

Crofts Crafts handmade card embellishments

Card making has always been a relaxing, creative outlet and I love trying to come up with new ideas for embellishments when I have a new card design.  They usually involve card, felt, string and whenever possible – googly eyes to add a little personality!

It can sometimes take quite a few attempts to get them looking just how I envisage – drawing and redrawing templates so I can make sure they look consistent each time.  Although this is also the great thing about buying handmade – each item may be slightly individual and made to order!  I’ve also slowly been learning how to paper cut over the last few years and this has turned out to be really useful when making small, fiddly embellishments I need to cut out.  Once I have a new addition to my collection, I do also tend to have a little production line going to make in bulk so I have a stash ready for your orders!

There is nothing better than seeing a bundle of craft supplies turn into your own little handmade creation and there is something very satisfying about making little fried eggs, ice creams or cups of tea in miniature! If you have any ideas about what I should attempt next, let me know in the comments below and why not check out how a mix of craft supplies turned into a recent thank you teacher card here?

Recovery and organisation April 2021

I do like a Spring clean, I am quite a messy worker, I get carried away and there’s NO time to put things away as I go !! So after I finish a project I have a big clear out .
This clear out I concentrate on my fabrics, I have amassed a lot over the years, there are some fabrics that I have held onto for so long and still have not used, there will be ‘that’ perfect project for it, one day.

I always feel so much better when the workroom is clean and tidy. I think it is a therapeutic way to clear my head before the next project.

There has not been much making done at the moment as I had Carpal Tunnel surgery done on my left wrist. The operation went well , its still a bit sore and nowhere near back to normal but definitely getting there. I think it is one of the  hazards of being a Sewist!

My Oh Sew Creative journey…..

Hello and welcome to Oh Sew Creative, this is my first blog post (long overdue!), but I wanted to introduce myself and give you a bit of background to Oh Sew Creative.

Oh Sew Creative business owner wearing scrubs made for the NHS

I am a creative, practical person who enjoys designing and making. I previously worked in the fashion industry but that seems a lifetime ago now! For the last fourteen years, I have been teaching textiles at a secondary school. I work with 11–18-year-old students guiding them through various textile projects and helping them to realise their design ideas. I love this part of my job; it really is amazing seeing the pride on a student’s face when they complete their product. I used to do this full-time, but parenthood called. I am now a mother of two gorgeous boys who keep me very busy! When they came along, I made the decision to reduce my working hours because teaching really is an all-consuming job. My family had to come first, not that pile of marking!

Life is easier now with both boys at school and I began to consider my work options. I knew I did not want to increase my teaching load at school. My boys are still young with so many commitments and I need flexibility. Then two years ago a friend asked me if I would run a sewing party for her nine-year-old daughter. I did and it was hard work but such fun too! The girls were so pleased  with their creations and I felt so proud of them. It was like the best parts of my job without the marking and naughty behaviour!

Oh Sew Creative was born and I have spent the last two years establishing my workshops, parties, courses and adult creative events. My Fizz & Feltmaking evenings were created on the way home from the school run, whilst chatting to friends! We were saying why should the kids’ get all the fun! Why indeed!? An evening for ladies to get together to be creative, chat, laugh and enjoy a glass or two of something cheeky! What is not to like – the ladies are always lovely, and it really does not feel like work at all! These evenings have been a real success and the sense of achievement these ladies feel by the end of the evening is great! My Handmade Felt Lavender Filled Bird craft kit was developed, because of these evenings.

Then, along came Covid and suddenly I could not do any of that! Big shock.

I have many ideas about growing Oh Sew Creative. One idea was to develop a range of craft kits. With Covid, this was suddenly a priority! I say priority, but between home schooling, sewing scrubs for the NHS and teaching, it did not really happen as quickly as I would have liked. I have spent the past six months developing a small range of craft kits. In October last year I was accepted to sell on The British Craft House, which was fantastic. I joined with one craft kit, the Lavender Woven Heart craft kit. I now have seven products listed. My latest craft kit aimed at children is a Handmade Felt Easter Egg decoration craft kit. The craft kits take hours to develop because of the problem solving and refining of a project. A big job is the project instructions included in each kit. I like to include lots of step-by-step photos to support the written content and help that visual learner!

Possibly I joined TBCH too early with just one craft kit, but hey what is the saying ‘in for a penny, in for a pound’ or something like that! I am working hard to increase my range of craft kits and my social media presence. I have lots of ideas for kits and I want to expand into sewing machine projects too. A key factor is I like to include more than just sewing in a kit. As a textile teacher, I expose my students to lots of new and exciting techniques. I want my customers to experience these techniques too! It would be very easy to supply pre-cut fabric and written instructions, but the sense of achievement is greater, if you have made the fabric too!

I look forward to a time when my workshops can run alongside selling my craft kits because the two complement each other so well. Fortunately, I had two years of workshops and parties where I had the opportunity to try projects out and reflect on the way I taught them. Most of my craft kits are inspired by these events, but with further refinement to make them viable as a craft kit!

Well, enough from me; if you have lasted until the end of this, thanks for reading! If, browsing ever does turn into buying, please remember to share your made product with me using #Ohsewproud on social media. I would love to see them!

All About myself and HRJ!

Welcome!  Let me start by telling you a little bit about myself!

I’m Fallon, a thirty-something year old, living in Hertfordshire with my husband and daughter.  I’m an avid crafter, have been all my life, trying my hand at many different activities for fun and making numerous things for my daughter and as gifts.   I also love home baking and drinking copious cups of tea!  I have a degree in photography and shoot freelance baby and children photography (when global pandemics don’t get in the way!)

I’ve been using polymer clay since I was a child, initially making teeny tiny food for my dolls house.  My husband bought me a food themed polymer clay book many years ago, and after experimenting with cakes and sweets, decided to start selling the increasing number of makes I produced, mainly to clear some space!!  The rest is history, HRJ was born in May 2011!

I chose to continue the foodie theme as I love all things quirky and retro – I’m an eighties child, so the retro food you find at old school birthday parties is an absolute favourite at mine – plates of iced ring biscuits, fondant fancies, etc – whenever we have a birthday at home, we always have that kind of tea party to celebrate!  I think the theme brings a sense of nostalgia to childhood/good memories from the past (my allsorts sweetie bracelet was one of my very first makes, and is still so popular today, with the young and old!). I’ve now also started to branch out into homeware and decorations…but more on that in my next blog post!

Inspiration strikes me at any time – I generally get distracted by anything cute and quirky, especially colourful eye catching things.  I love kawaii styles, and have incorporated it into some of my pieces.  Current trends inspire me, as well as actual foods; being a keen baker, I follow lots of baking accounts on social media, and sometimes try to recreate something edible into clay form!  I also have had many commissions and special requests over the years, and some I have felt would be really popular, so have then made these into pieces for my shop too.

I joined TBCH in early 2020 and love the unique community of makers here, they are all so helpful and friendly, with each and every one making beautiful high quality handcrafted items.

Oh and if you’re wondering…my favourite biscuit to dunk in my cup of tea is….a chocolate bourbon or Lotus Biscoff!

More Squashed Glass!

I’ve had another go at the squashed glass technique and this time I used opalescent glass which reflects light as opposed to transparent glass that transmits light.

I love the effect that has been produced where the various coloured pieces have met and merged. There has been some reaction where some different coloured pieces have overlapped and merged caused by the chemical make up of the glass colours I have used in this piece. Various colours have Lead, Copper or Sulphur in them and when they meet you can get some special effects ranging from subtle to dramatic.

This piece has some subtle reactions where the sulphur bearing red has overlapped the copper bearing greens and blues.

In addition a particular colour called Steel Blue has a tendency to dramatically change to a matt steel colour on the surface exposed to the air in the heat of the kiln. This hasn’t happened to a great degree because it was covered by the kiln shelf except for some subtle areas on the edges of the Steel Blue bits in the piece.

I shall square off the edges and slump this in a gently curved mould to make a lovely platter to be listed in my shop.

How to photograph fused glass?

Ever since I started selling online I have struggled with photographing my fused glass pieces to show them at their best. As you can imagine the main issue is light reflection on the glass. I have tried reflecting the lights off white card, black card and silver backed card. Pointing the lights at the backdrop, directly at the glass, and at the reflective card. All have produced mixed results and I seem to try a different set up every time I have a new piece to photograph.

My most recent set up is featured in the picture above and involved using two clamps to attach the light that is hanging down to a handy shelf above my ‘photo studio’ corner. I got a nice new camera for my recent birthday which has lots of handy features which have made a big difference and I shall probably be retaking pictures over the next few weeks.

Wish me luck!

Hearts aren’t just for Valentines!

I have had a lovely time over the Christmas lock down period making fused glass hearts in a cast iron pan. Thanks to an excellent tutorial from glasshoppa.com me and my daughter whiled away the time, when we couldn’t see the rest of the family, coming up with various combinations of glass to pile up in the mold ready for a hot fuse.

Once out and cooled down they needed a bit of grinding and cleaning before going back in the kiln for a nice fire polish.

Now I’m waiting for some little box frames to be delivered so I can mount them and then put on sale in my shop. Should make a lovely little letter box gift to send to those we love.
